Every summer many students intern at different companies to hone and sharpen their skills; for one student, he did just this and in turn found their passion.
Isaiah Alspaugh, a senior accounting major, completed a summer finance internship at Bell & Evans. When picking this internship, Alspaugh was familiar with Bell & Evans as a consumer and wanted to be employed at a place where he knew he’d enjoy the product.
When finding this internship, Alspaugh says he found out about this opportunity when the company had a table set up in the Allan W. Mund College Center. After presenting a copy of his resume he was contacted, interviewed, and hired.
As a finance intern. Alspaugh was primarily involved in accounts payable helping with invoices and overseeing that team. Due to his supervisor being out of the office frequently, Alspaugh got experience both in finance and managing the team.
Finding himself heavily involved in cost accounting due to Bell & Evans being in the manufacturing sector. He not only did this, but got to also help with budgeting, financial planning and analysis, and even the engineering side of the business.
“It solidified what I wanted to do.” Alspaugh said, “There are so many avenues to choose from business, accounting, finance, and there are so many different paths.”
Alspaugh found a passion for financial planning and analysis as well as an interest in the cost accounting side of business. There were so many choices to choose from with his career path, and he was able to narrow it down to what he enjoyed from his internship.
Alspaugh also loved the flexibility the financial planning and analysis side of business has to offer.
“I feel like you can grow so much, it’s a crucial position, and even if I am not at that company, you can always use those skills into other businesses and places,” Alspaugh said. He remarked how very universal and easily appliable it is to all businesses.
Alspaugh mentioned how much his cost accounting classes helped him throughout his internship and gave special thanks to Lindsay Porter, Assistant Professor of Accounting.
Alspaugh is still currently working at Bell & Evans and is looking forward to accomplishing his dreams.
