Serving for life

Kaylee Haws: student, sorority sister and tireless volunteer for her community.

Throughout her time at LVC, she has made her mark on not only the school, but the surrounding community, dedicating her time and effort to make a difference.

An integrative course taken her freshman year introduced her to the service community at LVC. Her professor and mentor, Jen Liedtka, helped her to truly immerse herself in opportunities around campus. Through staying informed on current and upcoming service projects, Haws was able to solidify herself as a valuable service member to the surrounding community through the Dutchmen Serve program.

In addition, Haws is a proud member of Gamma Sigma Sigma: the national service sorority on her campus. This opens service opportunities outside of strictly LVC related events to extend her reach even further.

“I absolutely love knowing I’ve been able to help out the community with the service I’ve done,” Haws said.

Haws’ community service passion didn’t start in college, but instead stemmed from previous experiences in high school. Being able to help out local organizations inspired her to continue pursuing similar opportunities once she landed at LVC.

Despite her years of volunteer experience, Haws recalls one event that has stuck with her as a rewarding moment.

“One of my favorite volunteer experiences has been helping Jen with the blanket project last spring semester,” she said.

Haws also mentioned her experience running with the local fire department, Union Hose, as another memorable event.

Haws has no plans of taking a break from service anytime soon, either. After graduation she plans to continue to volunteer locally: whether at LVC or a different location, she’s eager to continue her path of giving back to the community.

“It’s always great to know that the work you’ve done is helping others,“ Haws said.
