Fire stations throughout the country use this week, Oct. 4-10, to spread knowledge about fire safety. 

National Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire. The Great Chicago Fire took place in 1871 and killed an estimated 300 people and left more than 90,000 homeless. More than 17,400 buildings were destroyed.  

Annville and Cleona’s fire stations usually take part in multiple events during October. In the past, they have gone to local schools to teach about fire safety and have hosted open houses where anyone can come check out the station and its apparatus. However, due to COVID-19, Chief Philip Snavely said there are no events scheduled at this time. 

Both stations are always looking for water donations. Donations can be dropped off at Union Hose Fire Company of Annville located at 215 E Main St., Annville, PA 17003 or Cleona Fire Company No. 1 located at 136 W Walnut St., Cleona, PA 17042.
