Young Americans for Liberty on campus

Some students love science, others love music, but these students love politics.

On the LVC campus, a College Republicans Club exists for those who are more conservative, and a College Democrats Club for those who may feel more liberal. What about a third option for those who don’t quite feel they identify with either party?

A new group has been budding on campus called Young Americans for Liberty (YAL), a group dedicated more to principles than party. This club is designed for those students who feel they don’t fit within the Republican or Democrat titles and focus more on issues they feel are important to the liberty movement, such as constitutionalism, property rights and, in recent years, freedom of speech.

YAL is one chapter out of hundreds across the country, forming a massive organization for young adults from late high school through college age who are dedicated to one cause: liberty.

“The mission of YAL is to promote the values of liberty and free speech among college students,” Tanner Haynes, vice president of the club, said about its goal.

The LVC chapter of YAL has been progressively growing since its beginning in 2019, with plans to increase its membership in the LVC 2020 Student Engagement Fair which takes place Sept. 14 – 24. There is high anticipation that the club’s message will resonate with incoming freshmen.

The club plans to hold biweekly meetings in the Humanities building on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. They hope to offer a third option for those who feel they don’t fit within the two-party system.
