Leading through service

LVC will offer several new and returning service opportunities this semester under the leadership of Dr. Brandy Leininger, the new director of service and community engagement.

Leininger’s passion for volunteerism stems from appreciation of support she received as an undergraduate student.

“Community service has always been a part of what I do,” Leininger said. “I want to find ways to help other people like I was helped. It’s ok if you don’t have everything figured out. It’s about taking the next right step.”

She introduced GivePulse, a service website, to campus this semester. The site allows students to view upcoming volunteer opportunities, register for events and log their volunteer hours in one easily accessible place.

GivePulse includes events offered by campus organizations and by community partners including Children’s Miracle Network, Caring Cupboard and the American Cancer Society.

The variety of opportunities offered allows students to experience different areas of service and discover what inspires them.

“What I love about this role is that service is so important to building leadership roles and finding your special interests,” Leininger said.

Events this year include Nights of Service, service trips and monthly donation drives. The first drive of the semester supports Hershey Food Bank and will run until Monday, Sept. 22. Students can drop off donated dry goods in the collection bin outside Leininger’s office in the Frederick K. Miller Chapel.

Clubs interested in hosting Nights of Service can contact Leininger at bleining@lvc.edu or stop by her office. Further information about upcoming service events can be found on lvc.givepulse.com.
