Club prioritizing athletes comes to LVC

A new student-led club at LVC is making an impact by prioritizing mental health for athletes.

In its first year, the organization has already seen strong support from students, coaches and faculty.

The club was founded by Lyla Arfanella, a junior physical therapy major, who wanted to address the challenges student-athletes face when balancing sports, academics, and personal well-being. The club is part of “The Hidden Opponent, a national nonprofit that advocates for mental health awareness in athletics.

“After being a young girl who loved following the mental health journey of Victoria Garrick, I knew I wanted to bring her amazing mental health organization to LVC,” Arfanella said.

The club provides a space for athletes to share their experiences, find peer support and connect with campus resources. Meetings feature guest speakers, open discussions and educational sessions designed to reduce stigma around mental health.

Coaches across campus have collaborated with the club, having mental health games during its season. Athletes wear merchandise from “The Hidden Opponent” to spread awareness to the program.

With its growing momentum, the club hopes to expand, partner with as many student athletes as possible, and continue to build a supportive atmosphere for the athletic community.
