For Chad Schell no two days will look the same this fall, as he is both an academic success coach and the pitching coach for the baseball team at LVC.
He is having to navigate a semester filled with long hours while also supporting students both on and off the field. Schell said the dual role gives him a unique perspective on student life.
“I feel like I am able to relate to common issues faced by students because of the challenges that I face every day managing two roles,” he said.
As an academic success coach at the college, Schell works closely with the students to build skills that will help them in the classroom.
Once classes end in the afternoon, Schell heads to the baseball field where he assists the coaching staff during practices and games. While the team’s main season takes place in the spring, they practice three days a week in the fall with a primary focus on development.
Balancing the two roles takes a lot of planning but he sees similarity between coaching on the field and coaching in the classroom.
“People are always looking for the quick solution, but life doesn’t always work like that,” he said.
He tries to help both his students and athletes make small adjustments in their everyday routine to ensure long term success.
Students have responded positively to his approach as well as many athletes who meet with him academically saying they really appreciate his understanding of their schedules and challenges.
