Two sports, one athlete: Avery Grimm

For many people, playing sports is a cornerstone of their upbringing.

It’s something that teaches resilience, hard work and teamwork, but also acts as an outlet when life starts to come at you full force. For LVC junior, Avery Grimm, the love of the game never left him.

Grimm’s love for sports started at the early age of five when his parents decided to sign him up for their local youth football program.

“I don’t exactly remember why I started, but I have loved it since I was a kid,” said Grimm.

Since then, Grimm went on to have a stellar high school career and was a part of the seven percent to play football collegiately. As multiple football seasons came and went, Grimm found himself wanting more. After his junior football season commenced, he decided he wanted a new challenge: track and field.

Grimm’s decision to walk on to the track team after just finishing his football season the semester prior came from wanting a change.

“I just wanted to try something new,” Grimm said. “My college football career hasn’t been what I thought it was going to be, so walking on the track team was a fresh start for me.”

Any student athlete can attest to how heavy the workload becomes and how much busier life gets while playing a sport—imagine how busy a schedule might be once you become a dual-sport athlete.

“I have a set schedule to balance everything,” Grimm said. “I’m motivated because I know that I can keep getting better. I love track as a walk-on, and it’s making me a better athlete.”

On the track, Grimm is just as versatile and fast as he is as a running back on the football field.

With his main focus being hurdles and sprints, he partakes in multiple events ranging from the 60-meter hurdles to the 200-meter dash. Off the track, Grimm spends his time focusing on completing his bachelor’s degree in marketing and business administration with hopes of securing an online marketing degree post-graduation.
