LVC’s 2023 Earth Day events

LVC’s Environmental Sustainability Action Committee (ESAC) will host many events throughout the month of April to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day. 

The Earth Day events coming up are as follows: 

April 5, 2023, 12-1 p.m. (NG-203) – Environmental Internship and Research Talks by LVC students (Part 1) 

  • Evelyn Dyer ’23, environmental science major – NSF LAKES REU at Wisconsin  
  • Jess Koch ’23, environmental science major – DCNR Forestry Intern  
  • Jake Beidler ’23, environmental science major – Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems Project in New Hampshire  
  • Rachel Helt ’23, biology major and environmental science minor – The Wetlands Institute  
  • Shelby Guinard ’23, environmental science major – Conservation Crew with Concord, MA  

April 12, 2023, 12-1 p.m. (NG-203) – Environmental Internship and Research Talks by LVC students (Part 2) 

  • Daelyn Stabler ’23 biology major, environmental science minor – Animal Collections Intern at the National Aviary  
  • Emily Rouse ’23, ACS chemistry and environmental science majors – Mississippi State University NSF REU: Food, Energy, and Water Security & Ft. Indiantown Gap Environmental Compliance Internship  
  • Jacquelyn McBride ’24, ACS chemistry and English majors – University of Connecticut Avery Point and Mystic Aquarium REU Program.   
  • Ben Smith ’24, biochemistry & molecular biology and environmental science majors – Forestry Field Technician at Purdue University  
  • Ilyssa McLaughlin ’24, environmental science major – Humpback whales & Hawaii  

April 14, 2023, 3-5 p.m. – LVC Campus Clean-Up with Sustainability House 

Sign-up on Redbook to participate in a spring clean-up and mulching day facilitated by LVC’s Office of Community Service & Volunteerism and Facilities Services. 

April 15, 2023, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. – Service Event: Quittie Creek Garbage Clean-Up Extravaganza 

Contact Michael Schroeder at schroede@lvc.edu to participate in a trash clean-up event at the Quittapahilla Creek. Suitable plastic artifacts that are collected will be displayed in the Quittapahilla Creek Garbage Museum. Volunteers should meet in the parking lot of the Game Time Fun Center at 22nd St. & Cumberland St. in North Cornwall Township. 

April 19, 2023, 12-1 p.m. (NG-203) – Balancing Conservation and Human Uses of Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area 

Lauren Ferreri, manager of Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area (PA Game Commission), will speak about the PA Game Commission’s role in managing nearly 6,000 acres of natural resources while balancing conservation efforts. 

April 19, 2023, 7 p.m. – Keynote Earth Days Speaker Larry Weaner: Establishing Native Vegetation on Conserved Lands: Meadows, Shrublands & Woodlands 

Larry Weaner, author of Garden Revolution: How Our Landscapes can be a Source of Environmental Change, will discuss land management for ecological services. The Lebanon Valley Conservancy, LVC’s Biology Department, and LVC’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee will co-sponsor the event. The Richard H. and Karen R. Light Memorial Scholarship will be awarded at the start of this event by the Lebanon Valley Conservancy. 

April 20, 2023, 2-4 p.m. – Guided Nature Walk and Tour of LVC’s Wood Thrush Research Preserve 

Dr. Becker and Dr. Urban will lead a nature walk and tour of LVC’s Wood Thrush Research Preserve. Those who are interested should meet at the cow statue in front of facilities. 

April 21, 2023, 3-5 p.m. – LVC Campus Clean-Up

April 22, 2023, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. – Service Event: Annual Lebanon County United Way Day of Caring Spring Clean-Up in Quittie Creek Nature Park 

Sign-up on Redbook to spread mulch, clear trails and remove invasive species along the Quittie Creek Nature Park.  

April 26, 2023, 12-1 p.m. (NG-203) – Environmental Sustainability Initiatives at Lebanon Valley College 

The head of the LVC facilities department, Mike Mumper, and the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee will discuss the environmental sustainability initiatives that are in progress at LVC.
