Each year, sophomore music majors here at LVC spend their fall semester preparing for an important milestone recital.
The sophomore recital is a crucial step in every music major’s career as a student at LVC. It is a chance to prove to departmental peers and faculty alike that students are improving and benefiting from their studies.
Each sophomore music major is tasked with preparing a solo piece for their primary instrument or discipline during the fall semester, which they will then perform during one of three recitals in the spring.
Afterwards, they will meet with a board of music department faculty to discuss their progress and their future moving forward to their degree and beyond. They are meant to reflect on their progress thus far and evaluate if they feel they are on the right path.
This year, the three sophomore recitals will take place between Tuesday, Feb. 28, and Thursday, March 2, 2023.
Music majors of all classes, as well as music faculty and studio instructors, often come out to these recitals to encourage their peers and students, prepare for their own future experience with the tradition, and for the current juniors and seniors, to symbolically pass on the torch in a sense to the rising upperclassmen. Family and friends commonly attend these recitals as well, as it is usually the first time students perform as soloists during their time here.
