LVC’s American Sign Language club hopes to reintroduce the sign language course to the school’s curriculum.

The president of the ASL club, Mia Deibert, a third-year speech-language pathology major, spoke on the club’s plan to bring the sign language course to campus. This introductory course ran a few years ago, but they decided to cancel it until there was a Deaf teacher that could hold the class so that students would be fully immersed.

“There was a lot of interest, and it had a waitlist,” Deibert said.

Not only would this course bring more awareness to the Deaf culture and is a valuable skill to have for day-to-day life, but it is also practical for a variety of majors such as health science.

“We hope to make it another option to fulfill the language requirement, ” Deibert said.

The class would be focusing on teaching students introductory and advanced ASL as well as educating students on Deaf culture. This helps to make sign language more recognized to give everyone the ability to communicate.
