LVC celebrated International Day of Peace on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations in 1981. The purpose of this day is to invite the world to pause and think about what it means to live peacefully. In 2001, the General Assembly of the United Nations voted for Peace Day to become a day of ceasefire so that areas of the world in conflict would lay down arms.
Jen Liedtka, LVC service and volunteerism coordinator, believes that International Day of Peace is important for every community.
“In order for us to live peacefully, we have to have a personal appreciation for what peace means,” Liedtka said.
In honor of International Peace Day, Liedtka sold origami peace cranes for donations in Mund Dining Hall. Origami cranes originated in Japan as a symbol of peace. The idea of selling peace cranes was to pass on the message of peace and friendship within the LVC community.
All donations went to Church World Service to support their peace work.
