Students defend their portfolios

Digital communications (digiCOM) and interaction design (IxD) majors will defend their portfolios on Tuesday, April 5, and Thursday, April 7, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Chapel 101.

The students in the DCOM299/IXD299 Portfolio Defense class have spent this semester building a website from scratch that reveals their intended concentration and features at least nine of their works from the major. During the defense, they will present this website to their professors, the other majors, digiCOM alumni and anyone else who wishes to come to show their support.

“I’m shooting for a pass,“ Jon Lam, a sophomore digital communications major, said.

Lam will be the first to present on Tuesday, and, like most students in the class, is nervous for his five-minute presentation and the five minutes of questioning and defense of design and technical choices afterward.

Portfolio defense is mandatory for digiCOM and IxD majors, as they must pass the pass/fail class in order to get the required credits for any internship they take. They may either pass with distinction, pass, pass with revision or fail.

The students typically take Portfolio Defense in their sophomore year, though there are some juniors and seniors as well depending on scheduling. This year, there are about 30 students presenting.

Again, all are welcome to attend the portfolio defense on Tuesday and Thursday to support their friends and get a taste of what the digiCOM and IxD majors are all about.
