Guide to graduate school planning

An undergraduate degree is not the end of the road for many, but future options may seem unclear or unknown.

A 2019 survey shows that only 9.2% of students at LVC continue on to graduate school at a separate institution.

The Breen Center for Graduate Success, located on the basement floor of Mund College Center, provides ample resources to those undertaking the time-consuming application process. Students can receive help regarding degree exploration, interview preparation, online presence reviews and resume/cover letter writing. This office strives to bolster the academic success of all students.

Often times, seniors intend to continue their education after graduation, but deadlines approach rapidly for busy students. It is of great value to seek guidance, talk to professors and take it one step at a time.

“We assist alumni in their career planning, and most of the alumni who utilize our services are one-five years out from graduation,” Brynn Mason, the director of the Breen Center, said.

Individuals go to graduate school for a plethora of reasons: to expand their knowledge, to specialize in specific topics and to make more money. It’s simply important to keep a few key tips in mind.

“The most important part of the application process was communicating my own wants and means by which I would benefit from the programs,” Bradley Sedor, a previous master’s student, said.

Sedor received his engineering degree from Northwestern University. There, he solidified his future, knowing that he wanted to gain a job in human-centered design. He made it clear that anything is achievable; one must only do their research and learn about themselves along the way.

“My decision was ultimately based upon the communities and alumni networks the programs were fostering,” Sedor said.

It’s all about networking. Talking to professors can work wonders in the realm of outreach and understanding. Those with a Ph.D. have done this before, so their insight can be of great value. They can point an individual in the right direction.

The Breen Center has drop-in hours Monday through Friday. To schedule an appointment, email breencenter@lvc.edu or call 717-867-6560.
