Every spring, digital communications students take part in the major’s rite of passage— portfolio defense.
These students, typically sophomores, must code their own online portfolios that showcase the work they have done in the major over their time at LVC. They then present their websites at the end of the spring semester for review by the department. Students must pass portfolio defense in order to graduate with their digital communications degree.
This defense is typically held in the basement of Chapel, with professors and students alike as spectators. This year, portfolio will be held via Webex.
“I honestly think presenting online will help relieve some of the stress of defending my portfolio,” Alyssa Matheus, a sophomore digital communications major, said. “Plus, it gives me practice with pitching and interviewing via video call, which I will probably encounter when I am working in this field after graduation.”
The decision to forge ahead with portfolio despite the move to online classes was not reached easily. However, students in this major are more equipped than most to handle a presentation in this manner.
“Digital communications and interaction design are majors that are specifically focused on solving problems and creativity,” Dr. Jeff Ritchie, digital communications department chair, said. “They are uniquely prepared to make such a move.”
Portfolio defense will take place on Tuesday, April 14, and Thursday, April 16, from 6- 9 p.m. Approximately 30 students will present their work.
