Teacher by day, athlete by night

A college workload as a student-athlete can be demanding but to add the job of being a student-teacher on top of that is an even more daunting responsibility.

Andrew Eberhart is a senior on the men’s basketball team as well as being a student-teacher off the court. He currently teaches a fourth-grade intermediate class at Hershey Elementary.

“I have to fit basketball in with teaching since it takes up most of my time,” Andrew Eberhart, a senior forward, said. “Most times the team has lift and conditioning while I’m still at school. It’s not easy doing everything myself when there is no one to motivate you, but I love teaching and my time at school is rewarding.”

He is familiar with the challenge of being a student-athlete, having played on the basketball team for the past three years, however this teaching job brings a new chapter to his college experience.

Eberhart’s motivation to teach stems from his early years in school.

“I moved to another school in first grade and my teacher made my year great. Ever since that year I have wanted to become a teacher because of her,” he said.

The basketball season is soon approaching and Eberhart looks to be a key role for the team’s success being one of only two seniors. Although sports are time consuming, teaching is also his passion and he will work to balance his time between the two.

“My favorite part about teaching is seeing how the students grow throughout the year and achieve their goals,” Eberhart said. “I have a great host teacher who has taught me a lot and have built great relationships with the other teachers.”

His teaching is already in full swing at Hershey Elementary, nonetheless he is still preparing for the upcoming basketball season that will officially start October 15.
