Crosse Out Cancer

Lebanon Valley College’s men’s lacrosse program will hold its fifth annual Crosse Out Cancer game Saturday, April 8.

During the game, the Flying Dutchmen will wear unique purple jerseys that have been designed by Baker Landon, a senior captain and digital communications major.

“It’s a lacrosse game that you’re not playing for yourself,” Landon said. “You’re not playing for your teammates. You’re not even playing for LVC; you’re playing for a cause. It gives you the chance to put on a jersey and contribute to the fight that millions battle each day against cancer.”

The team honors Pat Cullinan ’79 during each Crosse Out game. Cullinan was a four-year starter and a two-year captain on the LVC lacrosse team who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2015. The players invite the Cullinan family to the game and present them with one of the jerseys featuring Cullinan’s number and last name.

The team is also selling t-shirts featuring a purple ribbon and wristbands to the public.

“The Crosse Out Cancer game and auction allow student-athletes to raise awareness by engaging the LVC community,” Alex Bushong, a junior attackman, said. “Not only raising awareness by representing the cause on the field, but also making it possible for the community to bid on our game worn jerseys with the proceeds befitting a great cause.”

The jerseys will be auctioned off online through a link on GoDutchmen.com, as well as in-person during the game. All proceeds from auction, t-shirt and wristband sales and donations collected will go to the American Cancer Society to support the fight against cancer.

“It goes to show you how much of a positive impact sports can have in this world and how humbling it can be when you’re the one making that impact,” Landon said. “It’s truly an honor and a pleasure playing in the Crosse Out Cancer game each year.”

The men’s lacrosse team will host Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent Albright at 1 p.m. on the day of the event.

The team is hoping to raise more than the $3,000 it raised last year.
