From high school baseball to captain of the Jackalopes

For most of his life, Justin White, a fourth year physical therapy major, thought baseball would be the sport he would continue playing after high school.

But when he came to LVC, he decided to take his athletic career down a different path. Instead of stepping onto the diamond, White began playing ultimate frisbee for the Jamming Jackalopes.

“I looked into playing baseball at LVC, but didn’t know if I would be able to balance academics with a full-time college athlete schedule,” White said.

White joined the frisbee team during the spring of his first year, where he would eventually become an important member.

“I was struggling making connections at LVC and was invited by the president at the time,” White said. “As soon as I got there, I knew it was the right club for me and wanted to play and take a leadership role as much as I could.”

Today, White serves as one of the captains of the Jackalopes. His responsibilities stretch further than simply playing during games. As a captain, White schedules practices and coordinates different tournaments for the team.

“My role is to get everyone involved no matter the skill level and have everyone enjoy their time that they sacrifice to be there,” White said. “Everyone deserves to have an escape from the stress of college.”

By encouraging his teammates to spend time together and enjoy playing, White has helped turn the team into more than a group of athletes; he has helped create a community of friends.

Although ultimate frisbee is different from baseball, the skills White developed during his baseball years have still carried over to his frisbee career.

“I would say that truly anyone can play frisbee no matter their athletic background,” White said.

The Jamming Jackalopes host practices every Tuesday and Thursday at 3:45 p.m. on the football practice field and every Sunday at 7:00 p.m. on the turf.
