Plechner is fashioning her future

As graduation quickly approaches, one LVC senior is reflecting on her past and focusing on her future. Greta Plechner, a senior creative arts student, is putting the final touches on her semester-long senior project for her directed arts class.  

Plechner designed four pieces of clothing using recycled materials, such as plastic bags, cardboard and bubble wrap. She began experimenting with fashion last year when she crafted a dress from cardboard and magazine pages.

“I’ve always been inspired by fashion,” Plechner said. “I’ve always wanted to do it so this year, I was like, ‘You know what, I’m a senior. Why not try it?’ So that’s my main focus now.” 

Her final project will consist of multiple outfits, including streetwear, a business outfit and a showstopper. 

“My main inspiration is Project Runway,” Plechner said. “I’ve always watched that growing up and I just thought it was really fun. That’s also why I wanted to stick to unconventional materials instead of using fabrics and typical fashion materials.  It was always my favorite part of Project Runway.” 

 As part of her major requirements, she explored drawing, sculpture and painting. She even studied abroad in Florence, Italy, where she learned about Italian art history.  

“It was a wonderful experience and further affirmed my decision to strive to be a designer,” Plechner said. 

Her commitment to creative arts has been a constant throughout her college education. Plechner is a member of Kappa Pi, a national art honor society and is responsible for the LVC chapter’s social media.

Beyond her artistic pursuits, she competed for three sports teams: golf, swimming and track and field. Plechner’s favorite part of her athletic experience was competing alongside her teammates. 

“It’s always such a positive environment, so it’s my favorite part of all my sports is just competing and cheering each other on and just having fun,” Plechner said. 

Plechner was a member of the women’s golf team.

 As Plechner looks toward her future, she envisions pursuing a career in fashion and even designing her own fashion line.  

“I would like to have some sort of corporate fashion job to figure it out and get comfortable with it,” Plechner said. “And then hopefully, have my own business. That’s my end goal.” 

Plechner has certainly made the most of her time at LVC, but she is ready for her future. 

Plechner’s art was on display in the Zimmerman Recital Hall in late April.
