Making the most of chilly temperatures

Jingle Jam is a time to celebrate the winter season and the accomplishments of the fall semester.

Between the dreary look outside your window, trekking across campus in frigid temperatures and sometimes snow, one of the worst times to be a college student is arguably during winter.

For many LVC students, with the limited activities available, it’s nearly impossible to not want to confine yourself to the warmth of your dorm room. When compared to the things to do in the warm weather offered by fall and spring, winter may lead you to believe that there’s simply nothing to do. Let’s talk about how you can keep yourself occupied, regardless of the temperatures outside.

During the week and weekend, there are several activities on campus that students can participate in. From comedy shows, movies, and even craft activities, various groups on campus put together activities for students to participate in. You can always check them out on Redbook.

Keeping it on the LVC campus, the Dutchmen have several sports teams competing during the winter, all of which have home games that are free for students to attend. Whether it’s a basketball game in Sorrentino Gymnasium, a swim meet, or even taking a short trip to Hershey Park Arena for the hockey teams, there are plenty of opportunities to cheer on your fellow Dutchmen. For all sports schedules, head to www.godutchmen.com.

If sporting events or on-campus events don’t interest you, being in Annville and with Hershey just a short drive away, there are plenty of other options. Do you love sweet treats? You can head just off campus to Swatara Coffee Company for a drink or something to eat. Desserts, Etc. in Hershey also offers several yummy drinks and baked goods.

If spending money is more up your alley, Hershey is home to Tanger Outlets where there are plenty of shops. Even if you aren’t looking to buy anything, the outlets are a great way to get off campus and out and about.

If you’re looking for things to do as a group, there are bowling alleys and escape rooms nearby, or you can take a trip to Hershey’s Chocolate World.

Regardless of what it is that you choose, it is important to do something. Whether it’s alone or with a group, make sure to take time to step back from school and reward yourself.
