Flying Dutchman Ale hops back to the valley

For the sixth year, the Flying Dutchman Ale returns to LVC for Homecoming. The FDA has become a special tradition at The Valley.

The Brew Crew, a group of LVC students and professors, work together to formulate, market, and brew the FDA. Dr. Elizabeth Sterner, assistant professor of chemistry at Lebanon Valley College, helps oversee the project.

“This is one of my favorite special projects here at LVC,” Sterner said. “The beer is special because the science side of the Brew Crew designs the recipe and helps out with the actual brewing process.”

In late spring, the Brew Crew formulates the recipe and sends it to Snitz Creek Brewery so they can make preparations. The Brew Crew and Snitz Creek then collaborate to brew the ale in September.

A total of 24 kegs of the FDA were brewed this year, while 10 were purchased by LVC for Homecoming. The ale can be purchased at the keg truck by the glass. It’s also available for purchase in growlers at many of those retailers.
