Four Greek organizations on campus are preparing to welcome new recruits.
Alpha Sigma Tau, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Iota and Gamma Sigma Sigma held rush events the week of Sept. 14 to welcome anyone interested in joining Greek Life at LVC.
“Recruitment can seem intimidating from the outside, but it really is just an opportunity to meet people and see whether you connect with the chapter,” Jenna Czajkowski, AST’s vice president of growth, said.
AST, the largest Greek organization of campus, is a national sorority that participates in philanthropy and service and promotes connection amongst its members. Despite the size of AST’s membership, the percentage of LVC students in Greek Life is small.
“Years back, I think around 40 percent of campus was in Greek life, and now I think it's below 5 percent,” Collin Schick, TKE’s new member educator, rush chair and social chair, said.
TKE is a fraternity on campus that promotes the mental and moral development of its members. Schick feels strongly about increasing the numbers in Greek organizations on campus. However, some feel that the small size promotes close connections.
“I feel like smaller orgs really benefit because everyone gets to know each other really well,” Ania Jameson, GSS’s membership vice president and alumni liaison, said. “I feel like it's more like a family,” they said.
GSS is a national sorority that focuses on promoting service and friendship on campus and in the community.
Multiple organizations concentrate on service and friendship, but uniquely, SAI is the only sorority or fraternity on campus to cater to students in music ensembles. In alignment with this, they have themed their rush week around musicals.
“I think the most exciting one for me will probably be our first night, which is on Monday. That's a Mary Poppins theme,” Loralie Love, SAI’s vice president of membership, said.
Other anticipated events include TKE’s Smash tournament and GSS’s “make your own pet rock” night. For any event, Czajkowski gave some advice for potential new recruits.
“You do not have to walk into any recruitment weeks already knowing exactly what you are looking for or knowing anyone in the chapter. I think one of the best things you can do is come in with an open mind and focus on where you can feel comfortable being yourself,” Czajkowski said.
