Volleyball club braces for big turnout amidst equipment shortage

The volleyball club prepared for its first meeting this week, but current members are concerned that one net may not be enough for the expected new members.

Kicking things off at the student engagement fair on Wednesday, Sept. 4, the volleyball club board sat outside, getting signatures from new and existing students to try to recruit new members.

In previous years, signatures exceeded 50 students, so a big crowd is normally expected for the first meeting. But this could cause problems for the club this year.

This year, the club is down to one net when they had two in years past. Even then, the number of new club members made it tough to set up games where players would quickly filter on and off the court.

“With the number of people we’re expecting to recruit, playing with one net is going to be rough,” Trenton Reed, the club’s treasurer, said.

Until the club receives a new net, they will be playing what they call queens of the court, a four versus four match where the winners stay on the court, and the losers rotate out.

Even with the challenge of having one net, the volleyball club board is excited to reconnect with existing members and meet all the fresh faces.

The volleyball club will meet in the Arnold Sports Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-9:20 p.m.
