An LVC ensemble pushes musical boundaries by playing experimental music.
The New Music Ensemble is small ensemble which uses non-popular and experimental music from the last century. The ensemble was organized three years ago by alumnus Hannah Pell ’16 and some of her fellow classmates. Timothy Wolfe, an adjunct assistant professor of music, teaches the class and directs the performance at the end of the semester.
“She and some of her classmates wanted an outlet to perform some experimental music they were learning about but didn’t have the opportunity to perform,” Wolfe said.
The repertoire changes each semester depending on who is participating and what his or her skill sets are since there is no set instrumentation.
This ensemble creates opportunities for students to expand their knowledge and create their own pieces. Austin Peterman, a junior audio music production major, has been given the opportunity to create an original piece which has 8 people playing the marimba at the same time.
“Tim is really good about taking ideas we have and finding ways to make them work,” Peterman said. “It’s really an ensemble where your only limited by your imagination.”
The ensemble is open to all students, even non-music majors, who are determined and willing to practice hard.
The current members are Megan Ebling, Jenna Harman, Katie Hockenbury, Nick Kochanek, Tyler Malachowski, Austin Peterman, Darnell Pierre and Luis Vera. The ensemble is set to play on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Lutz Hall.
