{"id":97,"date":"2016-09-07T16:18:50","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T16:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.lvc.edu\/lavie\/?p=97"},"modified":"2016-09-07T16:18:50","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T16:18:50","slug":"5-freshmen-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2016\/09\/07\/5-freshmen-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"5 freshmen debut in opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p>By Shilesky Montalvo &#8217;19, Staff Writer<\/p>\n<p>Five freshmen played in Lebanon Valley College\u2019s season opener against Berkeley College last Thursday, but it was the juniors who stood out when it came to scoring.<\/p>\n<p>After a scoreless first half, junior midfielder Matt Prince scored LVC\u2019s first goal in the second half. The team\u2019s second goal was scored by junior forward and midfielder Tyler Skye as the Fighting Dutchmen beat Berkeley 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Charlie Grimes is excited about this year\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s incoming class is a good group,\u201d Grimes said. \u201cThey bring a high level of energy and push our returning players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As far as expectations, Grimes has set high ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake the playoffs and play at the NCAA tournament,\u201d Grimes said.<\/p>\n<p>Helping to achieve those goals \u2013 five freshmen.\u00a0 Mitch Crane is one of them.\u00a0 He\u2019s a starter from York, Pa. Tanner Therit also saw playing time; he\u2019s from Littlestown, Pa. Both freshmen said it\u2019s been a transition from high school soccer to playing college soccer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn college soccer, you have to be faster, and you play with people who are 3-4 years older and bigger than you,\u201d Crane said.<\/p>\n<p>Both freshmen admit to being nervous when meeting the upperclassmen.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know what to expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut right off the bat, the guys were very welcoming,\u201d Therit said. \u201cThey made us feel a part of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that team is hoping for a great season. \u00a0One game marked on the calendar is one against Messiah College on Oct. 1.\u00a0 Till then, there are plenty more opponents to focus on.
