{"id":9345,"date":"2022-12-05T16:58:24","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T16:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=9345"},"modified":"2022-12-05T16:58:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T16:58:24","slug":"introducing-the-emerging-media-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2022\/12\/05\/introducing-the-emerging-media-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing the Emerging Media Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>By Annie Steinfelt \u201924, editor<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LVC\u2019s Department of Design, Media and Technology (DMT) introduced the Emerging Media Lab<br>(EML) to provide students access to new and disruptive technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lab will allow students to test the behaviors and ideas that they encounter while using<br>emerging media, to consider the strengths and weaknesses of these technologies and to<br>develop design strategies for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there are emerging technologies that industry, trade or academic organizations are saying<br>have the possibility to disrupt or change how the field works, we\u2019re looking to see how we can<br>give students access to them,\u201d Dr. Jeff Ritchie, chair of the DMT department, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DMT department recently purchased 10 Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headsets that<br>students will have the opportunity to use in the coming semesters, and the department hopes<br>to expose students to other disruptive technologies in the coming semesters as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific classes devoted to emerging media, such as AR\/VR and interface classes, will be<br>offered each spring, but students will also encounter emerging media in assignments or case<br>studies in existing DMT classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technology introduced through the Emerging Media Lab is made possible by fundraising<br>from donors and alumni.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>By Annie Steinfelt \u201924, editor LVC\u2019s Department of Design, Media and Technology (DMT) introduced the Emerging Media Lab(EML) to provide students access to new and disruptive technologies.
