{"id":736,"date":"2017-04-19T15:02:28","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T15:02:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.lvc.edu\/lavie\/?p=736"},"modified":"2017-04-19T15:02:28","modified_gmt":"2017-04-19T15:02:28","slug":"book-drive-for-womens-prisons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2017\/04\/19\/book-drive-for-womens-prisons\/","title":{"rendered":"Book drive for women&#8217;s prisons"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p id=\"E24\">By: Brianna Metsger \u201919, Staff Writer<\/p>\n<p id=\"E31\"><span id=\"E32\">In honor of Women\u2019s History Month, the Women\u2019s Services and Gender Resource Center (WSGRC) hosted a book drive through the Women\u2019s Prisons Book Project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E34\"><span id=\"E35\">This nationally recognized project collects and distributes all genres of books to women and transgender women in prisons across the country. This particular project only accepts paperback books, but the WSGRC will accept both paperback and hardcover books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E37\"><span id=\"E38\">The book drive started at the beginning of March and ended April 7. Some <\/span><span id=\"E39\">requested <\/span><span id=\"E40\">genres were fiction, nonfiction, women\u2019s health, law, politics, hair, textbooks and the Wicca religion. The drive collected more than 100 books since the beginning of March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E42\"><span id=\"E43\">Tamara Baldwin, a junior sociology major and house leader of the WSGRC, started the book drive to bring awareness to women who are easily forgotten by our society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E45\"><span id=\"E46\">\u201cI\u2019m hoping that people finding out about this organization encourages them to look more into many of the issues that women who are incarcerated face and hopefully give them much more acknowledgment<\/span><span id=\"E47\"> <\/span><span id=\"E48\">and attention,\u201d Baldwin said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E50\"><span id=\"E51\">According to The Sentencing Project, 64 percent of incarcerated women have been convicted of nonviolent crimes; however, the common view of women in prisons is negative and dehumanizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E53\"><span id=\"E54\">\u201cThey don\u2019t stop being women when they\u2019re behind bars,\u201d Baldwin said. \u201cThey don\u2019t stop being people. They still have many interests and hobbies and concerns, and if there\u2019s any way that we can help them to continue to express their humanity, then we are glad to help them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E56\"><span id=\"E57\">Theodora <\/span><span id=\"E59\">Sakellarides<\/span><span id=\"E61\">, adjunct inst<\/span><span id=\"E62\">ructor in English and sociology and<\/span><span id=\"E63\"> an LVC graduate and a founding member of the WSGRC, is advising the book drive. <\/span><span id=\"E65\">Sakellarides<\/span><span id=\"E67\"> tries to take on a charity project every few months and felt very strong about this particular project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E69\"><span id=\"E70\">\u201cI am someone who really stands by a restorative justice system that enables current prisoners to build a new and better life once they\u2019re released back into society,\u201d <\/span><span id=\"E72\">Sakellarides<\/span><span id=\"E74\"> said. \u201cI think that knowledge is power, so I would want all incarcerated people who are going to be introduced back into society to have access to knowledge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E76\"><span id=\"E78\">Sakellarides<\/span><span id=\"E80\"> is proud of student activists who take the time to do something for others despite being in the most overwhelming part of the semester.
