During a unique\u202fschool\u202fyear\u202ffor service project opportunities, the primary service initiative on campus\u202fis\u202fblanket making for victims of abuse.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students at LVC have\u202fbeen\u202fmaking\u202fno-sew fleece\u202fblankets for the Children\u2019s Resource Center (CRC) for the past\u202ftwo years\u202fand prior to the 2020-2021 school year, various student groups participated in the project.\u202fAfter the tragic loss of a 12-year-old boy in Annville as a result of abuse in late fall,\u202fJen Liedtka, the service and volunteerism coordinator, decided to give more focus on the project.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLate in the fall, we decided to highlight the work of the CRC at the Symposium and the opportunity we have to work with them,\u201d Liedtka said. \u201cHorribly, another situation of child abuse then happened in Annville and we put\u202feven more focus on our support of the organization, including President MacLaren\u2019s 250 blanket challenge.\u201d\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this semester, President James MacLaren challenged the LVC community to join him and his\u202ffamily in making 250 blankets, which\u202fhelped make\u202fthe project a success. The campus community well-exceeded his challenge, with approximately 537 blankets collected.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a true community collaboration,\u201d Liedtka said. \u201cStudents from the Annville-Cleona school district made about 100 of the blankets we collected. Many other community members participated too, with the Annville-Cleona Subways serving as drop-off\u202fpoints for those blankets. Various community organizations also participated. And a special shoutout to our own student athletes who made over 175 of the blankets.\u201d\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CRC is an advocacy center with offices in Harrisburg and Lebanon that seeks to reduce the trauma and aftermath of abuse for children\u202fages 0-18\u202fwho are brought in by Children and Youth or the police.\u202fEach child\u202fcan\u202fselect a hand-made blanket\u202for stuffed animal\u202fas a comfort object to take with them. The CRC indicated that the children\u202foften choose the blankets, especially the older youth they see.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile we are so thankful\u202ffor the chance to support the work of the CRC through our blanket-making project, I hope that everyone\u202fwill take the time to become more aware\u202fof issues related to abuse,\u201d Liedtka said.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
