{"id":6778,"date":"2021-02-27T20:03:06","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T20:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=6778"},"modified":"2021-02-27T20:03:06","modified_gmt":"2021-02-27T20:03:06","slug":"sorority-recruitment-during-a-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2021\/02\/27\/sorority-recruitment-during-a-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Sorority recruitment during a pandemic\u202f"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>By Marj O\u2019Neill &#8217;21,\u202fassistant editor\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the busiest sorority recruitment season of the year approaches\u202fduring COVID-19, sororities\u202fmust\u202fadjust how they recruit new members.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LVC has three sororities\u202fon campus:\u202fAlpha Sigma Tau, Gamma Sigma\u202fSigma and Kappa Lambda Nu. All three sororities will be recruiting new\u00a0sisters\u00a0who are eligible to join based on GPA requirements and\u202ftheir\u202fnumber of LVC credits.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sorority recruitment typically\u202flasts one week,\u202fconsisting\u202fof\u202finformation sessions to learn more about being in a sorority and socials where those interested can meet sisters of different sororities. At\u202fthe end of recruitment\u202fweek, on what is known as \u201cbid day,\u201d\u202fthe sororities invite those sisters who are eligible and those who fit their values to become members of\u202ftheir\u202forganization.\u202fWith COVID restrictions on campus, recruitment will look a little different this year for all three sororities.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have been reaching out to\u202fgirls via social media platforms to recruit them,\u201d Hannah&nbsp;Wintermute, head of recruitment for Kappa Lambda Nu, said.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fAlpha Sigma Tau and Kappa Lambda Nu\u202fwere both allowed to host in-person events since last semester in adherence to state and\u202fLVC COVID-19 social distancing and mask guidelines. Both sororities have\u202fhosted\u202fa mix of virtual and in-person events to accommodate everyone\u2019s comfort levels. Gamma Sigma\u202fSigma\u202fwas only recently given permission from their national board to have in-person recruitment socials and service events.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSimply put, virtual recruitment has been difficult. We have never done this before,\u201d Maci&nbsp;Kerlin, the membership vice president of Gamma Sigma\u202fSigma, said.\u202f\u201cWe\u2019ve found ways to make things work by playing trivia, watching Netflix\u202fand playing the popular game \u2018Among Us\u2019 all from the comfort of our own desks.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making these new adjustments to recruitment comes with new challenges for each sorority to still make meaningful connections with potential new members to gain new members.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people find Zoom to be awkward and hard to connect with others on,\u201d Aimee&nbsp;Bealer, the vice president of growth for Alpha Sigma Tau, said. \u201cThe college doesn\u2019t have many spaces that allow for\u202fa group of 50+ people to appropriately social distance, which is totally okay, but it has caused a lot of anxiety for me.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the setbacks and challenges of sorority recruitment during a pandemic,\u202fthe sororities\u202fhave still managed to\u202fbond and cultivate a sisterhood.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThroughout COVID we have all done a great job checking in on one another, ensuring we are all succeeding in classes and\u202fextracurriculars,\u201d&nbsp;Kerlin&nbsp;said. \u201cWe\u2019ve maintained sister bonding activities throughout this challenging time.
