{"id":6526,"date":"2020-10-20T14:36:13","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T14:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=6526"},"modified":"2020-10-20T14:36:13","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T14:36:13","slug":"international-students-take-distance-learning-to-next-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2020\/10\/20\/international-students-take-distance-learning-to-next-level\/","title":{"rendered":"International students take distance learning to next level"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>By:\nMegan Finlan \u201921, co-editor in chief<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nmany students at LVC have decided to remain remote in light of COVID-19,\ninternational students are taking distance learning across oceans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently,\nLVC has three full-time students completing classes while outside the U.S.\nSimilar to students living inside the American borders, these students are completing\ncourse work through asynchronous assignments, recordings and Zoom lectures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nstudents have experienced many challenges, including time zone difficulties and\ntechnology failures,\u201d Terri Rosenberg, assistant professor of English, said.\n\u201cHowever, it definitely helped that all three students are seniors, and they\nwere familiar with several of their professors and LVC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For\none international student, distance learning isn\u2019t the only challenge she\u2019s had\nto overcome. My Ho, senior English and environmental science major, is still in\nNew Zealand after studying abroad in the spring 2020 semester. Due to border\nclosures, Ho has been unable to return home to Hanoi, Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\ndespite being unable to return home or travel back to campus, Ho is remaining\ndedicated to her classes and is making the best out of an unexpected situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nbiggest challenge so far is feeling out of touch with the materials and the\npeople in my class,\u201d Ho said. \u201cI\u2019m taking three science classes at the moment\nand all of them require lab attendance. I couldn\u2019t perform the experiments\nmyself, and I have to watch the lectures in recording, which makes it difficult\nfor me to relate to the lessons.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ho\nexplained that the aspects of being a real \u201cstudent,\u201d like attending in-person\nclasses, meeting up with friends, taking weekend trips and working part-time\nare what she misses the most about life at LVC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt\nthe moment, I feel like I\u2019m more of a part-time student who spends most of her\ndays inside the house and focusing more on having the best time here in New\nZealand,\u201d Ho said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nCOVID-19 continues to impact what college life looks like in the U.S. and\ninternationally, all three students hope to return to campus this spring if\nprotocols allow.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>By: Megan Finlan \u201921, co-editor in chief While many students at LVC have decided to remain remote in light of COVID-19, international students are taking distance learning across oceans.
