{"id":6242,"date":"2020-09-21T23:57:59","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T23:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=6242"},"modified":"2020-09-21T23:57:59","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T23:57:59","slug":"english-professor-pursues-botanical-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2020\/09\/21\/english-professor-pursues-botanical-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"English professor pursues botanical interest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>Liam Schmidt \u201922, staff writer\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of the students at LVC are acquainted with Dr. Robert Machado only as one of the English\nprofessors, the Chair of Humanities and Director of English is also quite the experienced botanist.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to his undergraduate studies in biology, Machado\u2019s interest in gardening has grown to take over his backyard during the last several years as he maintains an increasing variety of plants and herbs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Machado is particularly fond of his exotic hot peppers, like the biquinho, guajillo, scotch bonnet,\nscorpion and the bhut jolokia, better known as the ghost pepper. He also looks after more common\nvegetables (tomatoes, onions and carrots, among many others), herbs and several fruit trees.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quiet and visceral, working the dirt, turning soil, composting, waiting, harvesting, tending to,\nphysically making,\u201d Machado said. \u201cIt\u2019s pleasing as well to dry, collect, sort and store seeds in little waxy\nglassine bags.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while he has always taken pleasure from working out in the garden, Machado now also enjoys watching his 3-year-old son encounter the ever-changing world in their backyard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe grazes like a little goat on oregano, fennel, sorrel, lemon balm, basil, even an occasional horseradish\nleaf,\u201d Machado said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to a diverse array of plants, the garden provides the ingredients for Machado\u2019s homemade\nkimchi, kvass, kombucha and heirloom tomato sauce. Some of these take quite a while to prepare, but\nthe extra time is well worth it in his estimation.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The tomato sauce] usually takes all day, and the house, for me, fills with a warm, loving scent,\u201d he\nsaid.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next year, Machado hopes to expand his garden to include a greenhouse where he can keep succulents and cacti along with a few pieces of midcentury modern furniture.
