{"id":6104,"date":"2020-09-10T17:57:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-10T17:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=6104"},"modified":"2020-09-10T17:57:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-10T17:57:23","slug":"languages-professor-discusses-transnational-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2020\/09\/10\/languages-professor-discusses-transnational-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Languages professor discusses transnational education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>By: Liam Schmidt \u201922, staff writer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To improve the education of\nstudents who frequently move across borders, LVC Professor of Spanish Dr.\nKathleen Tacelosky hosted an online webinar for teachers last Sunday to discuss\ntransnational education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tacelosky based the\ninteractive session on over a decade of research in Puebla and Zacatecas, Mexico\nand focused on the diversity of transnational students\u2019 life experiences.\nThroughout, she emphasized the importance of having positive relationships with\nstudents returning to Mexico from the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[They] need empathy and\npatience,\u201d Tacelosky said. \u201cMany students experience depression when they\ntransition back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She attributed this sentiment\nnot only to the shift in culture but also the fact that many of these students\nexperience problems in school, having studied English in the U.S., not Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also noted that many of\nthe students who return to Mexico express an earnest desire to maintain their\nEnglish proficiency. However, due to the pressure exerted upon them to learn\nSpanish, it is difficult for transnational students to keep up with both\nlanguages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou could see him anguished\nabout the possibility of losing his English,\u201d she said, commenting on a short\ninterview with a student from Zacatecas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the findings of her study, Tacelosky has created a program designed to help teachers in Mexico become more sensitive to the needs of transnational students. She intends to have this course implemented in their post-secondary curriculum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tacelosky also discussed improving\nthe education of children in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the U.S., we need to\noffer Spanish language classes at a younger age for students who might end up\nback in Mexico,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to designing the\ncourse for transnational educators, Tacelosky has written extensively on the\ntopic and has published her work in journals such as <em>Hispania<\/em> and <em>Mextesol<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia State University\u2019s\nCenter for Transnational and Multilingual Education sponsored the webinar;\ntheir next presentation will be on disability and multilingualism.
