{"id":6057,"date":"2020-08-27T19:14:25","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T19:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=6057"},"modified":"2020-08-27T19:14:25","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T19:14:25","slug":"lavies-back-to-the-books-new-president-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2020\/08\/27\/lavies-back-to-the-books-new-president-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"LaVie\u2019s Back to the Books: New president on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>By:\nMegan Finlan \u201921, co-editor in chief<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students\nand faculty are likely to see a new face around campus as the College welcomes\nDr. James MacLaren as LVC\u2019s 19<sup>th<\/sup> president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior\nto accepting his new role at LVC, President MacLaren spent 28 years at Tulane\nUniversity before serving as the Provost at Xavier University in Chicago. President\nMacLaren accepted the offer to fill Dr. Lewis Thayne\u2019s shoes as president in\nFebruary, with his term officially beginning July 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt\nboth of my prior institutions, my work was focused on building a student-centered\ninstitution,\u201d MacLaren said. \u201cWhen I was approached about the opportunity at\nLVC, I was so impressed by the commitment of the faculty, staff and trustees in\nfostering that same approach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While\nPresident MacLaren\u2019s current and primary focus will be maintaining a healthy\ncampus, his sights are already set on the future of LVC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President\nMacLaren stated that he hopes to continue diversifying program offerings in the\nfuture. In recognition of a projected decline college enrollments over the next\ndecade, President MacLaren hopes to focus specifically on graduate education\nand developing non-degree options such as certificates and short courses aimed\nto help workforce redevelopment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\nthink there are great opportunities and a bright future at LVC,\u201d MacLaren said.\n\u201cClearly the short-term objectives are to navigate through the challenges that\nCOVID-19 presents, and that will likely occupy much of my time and that of the\ncommunity this first year. However, I believe it is also important to start to\nplan for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During\nthese times of uncertainty, President MacLaren hopes to see students make the\nmost of their time while on campus as he shares some words of advice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEngage\nfully in your education and with our dedicated faculty and staff,\u201d MacLaren\nsaid. \u201cTake advantage of the wealth of co-curricular and leadership opportunities\nthat the College offers.
