{"id":461,"date":"2016-12-01T15:35:41","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T15:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.lvc.edu\/lavie\/?p=461"},"modified":"2016-12-01T15:35:41","modified_gmt":"2016-12-01T15:35:41","slug":"remembrance-vigil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2016\/12\/01\/remembrance-vigil\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembrance vigil"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">By: Tim Schumacher &#8217;18, staff writer<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Nearly 30 LVC members gathered in Miller Chapel Lobby for the Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil on November 15.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Students came to provide poems, personal experiences and stories while others came just to listen and offer their condolences for those who lost their lives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The crowd consisted of a few transgender members on campus who gave insight of what it is like to be transgender at LVC and the challenges that come with it. The conversation continued regarding new external pressures transgenders feel from the recent election outcome with Caitlyn Jenner being the national transgender figure.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to relate to a celebrity when so many transgenders live in the margins,\u201d Andrew Godleski, a transgender student, said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">According to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 55 percent of all reported LGBT homicide victims were transgender women, and 50 percent were transgender women of color. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cTransgender people face a life filled with suffering,\u201d Reverend Dr. Paul Fullmer, chaplain and director of service at LVC, said. \u201cWe make LVC a safe place for them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">During the remembrance vigil, pictures and background information of dozens of transgender women who had recently lost their lives played on a PowerPoint for members to acknowledge. After personal stories and experiences were shared, a candle lighting service and moment of silence was held. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">For someone who is unsure of his or her gender identity or who wants to talk about the subject can reach out to the Women\u2019s Services and Gender Resource Center.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">The counseling center and Dr. Fullmer&#8217;s office\u00a0are also great places to speak one\u2019s mind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 10.5pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a trans woman and has been celebrated at LVC since 2005.
