{"id":3999,"date":"2018-09-24T19:21:39","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T19:21:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=3999"},"modified":"2018-09-24T19:21:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T19:21:39","slug":"2018-brew-crew-stew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2018\/09\/24\/2018-brew-crew-stew\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Brew Crew stew"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p>By Emilie Vicario &#8217;19, staff writer<\/p>\n<p>The Brew Crew traveled to Snitz Brewery earlier this month and created the new recipe for this year\u2019s beer that will be sold Homecoming weekend.<\/p>\n<p>This year is the 5<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Brew Crew\u2019s Flying Dutchman Ale. Students who are a part of the team are recruited from majors ranging from chemistry to digital communications. Students have the responsibility to design, produce and sell the ale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives students the chance to participate first-hand in an activity that could be part of their future career,\u201d Elizabeth Sterner, assistant professor of chemistry, said. \u201cThey\u2019re making something real that makes their friends and family happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ale stays within certain guidelines to assure that anyone will enjoy it, but students have the freedom to choose the malt grains and hops used. This creates variety each year because the recipe is specific to that year&#8217;s group of students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted a way to get more involved with homecoming, especially if it\u2019s being able to get together with other majors to put our knowledge to use in a real-world setting and create something everyone will enjoy,\u201d Caitlin Ritchey, a senior biology major and Brew Crew member, said.<\/p>\n<p>Flying Dutchman Ale is popular among alumni and the community. It benefits LVC with both the ale and branded merchandise supporting the Brew Crew and the College.
