{"id":3900,"date":"2018-09-23T16:24:11","date_gmt":"2018-09-23T16:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=3900"},"modified":"2018-09-23T16:24:11","modified_gmt":"2018-09-23T16:24:11","slug":"safe-space-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2018\/09\/23\/safe-space-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Safe space for students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p>By Kayla Heiserman &#8217;20, staff writer<\/p>\n<p>Stonewall House is a special interest house at Lebanon Valley College which houses 11 LVC students all committed to educating others and advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community.<\/p>\n<p>Leo Thomas, a junior Digital Communications major, began living in the house this year and views it as a sanctuary. \u201cLiving in Stonewall has allowed me to be more expressive,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cI don\u2019t think about how I present myself as often as I would in a \u2018normal\u2019 living space. I\u2019m much more open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The residents of the house include both students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies alike.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan Schultz, a junior Psychology major, identifies himself as an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. \u201cI think if people aren\u2019t hurting anybody they should be able to live in the way they choose without being judged for it, you know,\u201d stated Schultz. \u201cIf you see something that\u2019s not fair or right, even if it doesn\u2019t necessarily affect you directly, it\u2019s important to stand up for what\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporting anyone who feels unsafe or unsure regarding their sexuality or gender is a responsibility of those in Stonewall House. This is done through community hours and events open to all LVC students both in the house and around campus.<\/p>\n<p>Stonewall House is open for community hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day as a \u201csafe space\u201d for students. It is located in Centre Hall, right in the middle of campus next to the Peace Garden.
