Every year, the Board of Trustees selects a sophomore student to serve on the board for a period of two terms. This year, the Board selected Malia Waltman, an international business and digital communication double major, to serve as a Student Trustee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t want to apply because of the recognition or because others suggested I should, I wanted to because it meant something to me and I could see myself making a difference,\u201d Waltman said. \u201cUltimately, I chose to apply because I thought of all the people I have met since coming to LVC.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a Student Trustee, Waltman will attend every Board meeting, as well as participate in certain committees to assist in the decision-making of the College\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expect this to be a learning experience, and I want to see how it will challenge me as I add a different perspective\u00a0to the Board while they\u00a0teach and mentor me through the process,\u201d Waltman said. \u201cLooking forward, I would like to look back on my time as a Student Trustee and say it helped to shape me into who I became.\u201d<\/p>\n

The process of selecting a new student for this position seems faster than what most students expect. First, they turn in their application. Then, they go through student nominations, where they have to get a certain amount of signatures from their peers (in their class). Then, if they get enough signatures, they go through the interview process.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is an odd feeling\u00a0to be competing\u00a0against other people, but it was great to know that no matter what all of the candidates were amazing people who would do a great job as a Student Trustee,\u201d Waltman said.<\/p>\n

Waltman will begin her term at the end of the last board meeting in May 2018.<\/p>\n
