Internships are an important part of the curriculum at Lebanon Valley\u00a0College;\u00a0some\u00a0students have\u00a0taken their internship\u00a0opportunity to the state level.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Students who intern\u00a0at the Pennsylvania Capitol building\u00a0have the opportunity to work with Pennsylvania\u2019s\u00a0senators,\u00a0lieutenant\u00a0governor and\u00a0governor. A day of work\u00a0includes attending committee meetings, conducting research, writing citations, organizing events\u00a0and making\u00a0lasting\u00a0connections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jordan\u00a0Hykes, a senior politics major,\u00a0interned\u00a0for the\u00a0lieutenant\u00a0governor\u2019s\u00a0office\u00a0last\u00a0summe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0part (of the internship)\u00a0I loved the most was interacting\u00a0with a wide variety of people,\u201d\u00a0Hykes\u00a0said. \u201cSometimes I was talking with various legislators and lobbyists and other times I talked with tourists from various\u00a0countries.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hykes\u00a0felt\u00a0the internship helped his communication skills and understanding of politics\u00a0firsthand. Over the summer, he acquired a fair amount of practical knowledge for Pennsylvania politics that will help him in his major and future studies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cassidy\u00a0DeCosmo, a senior politics and pre-law major, is currently interning with the\u00a0governor\u2019s\u00a0office of\u00a0constituent\u00a0services.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0important to stay up-to-date on what\u2019s going on in\u00a0Pennsylvania politics and news,\u201d\u00a0DeCosmo\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cNo matter what I do during a day, it\u2019s always exciting and I\u2019m always learning.\u00a0 Plus,\u00a0the people I work with are so kind and willing to help in any way and that makes going to\u00a0work so much more enjoyable.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0interning,\u00a0DeCosmo\u00a0has learned to work independently with little instruction\u00a0and\u00a0has\u00a0improved her communication skills and writing abilities. Her job includes writing and sending letters, answering questions from constituents\u00a0and working with a variety of directors on projects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DeCosmo\u00a0believes if a student gets an\u00a0offer, one will put the skills learned at LVC to use.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s\u00a0cool to see\u00a0those two worlds merge and you will have an amazing time,\u201d\u00a0DeCosmo\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hykes\u00a0also advised students who are seeking an internship at the Capitol\u00a0to\u00a0do whatever\u00a0one\u00a0can to\u00a0land\u00a0one.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTry to put yourself out there and talk to people,” Hykes said. “You never know who you will meet and what you will overhear.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
