{"id":283,"date":"2016-11-14T14:47:55","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T14:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.lvc.edu\/lavie\/?p=283"},"modified":"2016-11-14T14:47:55","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T14:47:55","slug":"trick-or-treat-for-canned-goods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2016\/11\/14\/trick-or-treat-for-canned-goods\/","title":{"rendered":"Trick or treat for canned goods"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">By: Brianna Metsger, Staff writer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">Halloween is usually about getting candy, but for some Lebanon Valley College students the holiday is about giving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">The sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau go trick or treating every year, but instead of asking for candy, the sisters ask for canned goods and nonperishable items to donate to The Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. Collecting and donating the items has been a tradition of the sisters of \u0391\u03a3\u03a4 for more than 20 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">This year the sisters beat their grand total of food items from last year by collecting 794 total items to donate. This included 624 canned goods, 84 boxes, 86 miscellaneous items and $85. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">The sisters find the experience to be rewarding and encouraging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">\u201cIt\u2019s awesome to be able to make a difference even in the smallest way,\u201d Abbey Corbin, junior biology pre vet major and president of \u0391\u03a3\u03a4, said. \u201cI participate because it\u2019s just awesome to be a part of something like this. To see the look on the faces of the people at The Ronald McDonald House, to see how much they appreciate it, and knowing it\u2019s going to help so many people just makes you feel proud of yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">Corbin believes the tradition is incredible not only for those who utilize The Ronald McDonald House, but also for the sorority and the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not just the sisters of \u0391\u03a3\u03a4 making a difference, it&#8217;s the people that come out and also help in the community,\u201d Corbin said. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see everyone from a small sorority on campus and the entire community of Annville and now Palmyra reaching out to make a difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">The experience has such lasting benefits on some sisters that they even return to help as alumnae. Jes Geyer, a\u00a02016 graduate, plans to return every year that she can to aid the sorority in this tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">\u201cI love interacting with the community,\u201d Geyer said. \u201cTonight, I even met a woman whose son needed the care of The Ronald McDonald House because he was born premature, so her family personally used this resource.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">She also believes that it\u2019s really encouraging to have the community viewing the sorority and its tradition in such a positive light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">\u201cI&#8217;m really proud of the sorority in the way that they&#8217;ve taken it into their own hands,\u201d Geyer said. \u201cI&#8217;m glad we&#8217;ve grown so much because that allows us to do so much more and really impact the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">The sisters aim to collect even more nonperishable items next Halloween. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">If you are interested in joining \u0391\u03a3\u03a4 or have any questions, contact Emily Kissinger at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:agk003@lvc.edu\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">agk003@lvc.edu<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>By: Brianna Metsger, Staff writer Halloween is usually about getting candy, but for some Lebanon Valley College students the holiday is about giving.
