The price for commuter permits rose from $50 last year to $75, and Gold lot remained the same at $75, while other lots saw a spike, with prices for the red lot at $150, the Arnold Sports Center lot at $175 and the Derrickson lot at $200. This has caused frustration among students, especially with the higher fee and the current development of parking spaces.

“I find it hard to get parking daily unless I’m super early or get lucky and find a parking spot midday.”, said an anonymous second-year commuter student. “I understand it is a process, but raising the prices for us doesn’t seem fair.”

Dealing with these concerns from students, Brian Boyer, chief of campus & public safety, reported that even with the new parking system in place, citations have dropped by nearly 50 percent compared to previous years. Boyer also added that students who fall outside the 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. parking allowance, such as students with internships, clinicals and other off-campus obligations, are not allowed any special permission for parking and should speak with their professors about their situation to arrange adequate travel time to and from campus.

For Ainsley Bressler, a senior political science major who transitioned from living on campus to commuting this year, shares the impact of these new changes.

“I do not think the increase in price for commuters feels necessary, considering that there has been no additional parking added for commuters,” Bressler said.

Bressler shared that some days when traveling to campus after her internship, there are barely any spaces, and with her tight schedule, she can’t park far away either. Dr. Sarah McDowell, vice provost of student affairs, emphasized that the new parking tiers were created by the Parking Advisory Group, which is a group of students who review the system and share student concerns, as well as balance campus demand for more parking.

“The increased rates apply to a smaller number of higher-demand parking options, including Red lot, ASC lot, and the Derrickson lot, which provide greater proximity, convenience or reserved access,” McDowell said.

McDowell explained that the new rates for parking have been established but will be further evaluated based on campus demand and student feedback for future years. McDowell reported that an additional 30 spaces have already been added near the Arnold Health Professions Pavilion (AHPP). She mentioned that expansion for Gold Lot is underway for more spaces, and that creating more spaces will continue to be based on parking patterns and capacity across campus.

LVC will continue to evaluate campus demands and student feedback for any future plans to be made. Whether these new additional parking spaces will help ease the stress of finding parking is yet to be seen. Until then, students are left waiting to see if higher permit fees stay the same or if the new construction of additional parking will be beneficial for the campus community.

By Ana Diaz '29, staff writer LVC has introduced a new parking system for the 2026-2027 academic year, with increasing prices and the development of new parking spaces. Over the summer, students were emailed about [...]

[3,5,7,8

post-17364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-campus-news","category-features","category-front-page","category-homepage
["GET
