{"id":170,"date":"2016-10-06T17:46:51","date_gmt":"2016-10-06T17:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.lvc.edu\/lavie\/?p=170"},"modified":"2016-10-06T17:46:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-06T17:46:51","slug":"be-heard-at-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2016\/10\/06\/be-heard-at-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"Be heard at polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p>By: Sammi Hummer \u00a0\u201917, Staff writer<\/p>\n<p>Registering to vote and the act of voting are rights that most college-aged Americans have.<\/p>\n<p>With the upcoming 2016 presidential election on Nov. 8, the question of whom to vote for is still lingering for some people, including some students on campus. \u00a0Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are the two primary candidates in this election, with other candidates such as Gary Johnson running on other party tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Emily Sweeney, a senior political science major, believes that this is the time to find where one lies on the political spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of college-aged students say their votes don\u2019t matter; they don\u2019t really support any of the candidates,\u201d Sweeney said. \u00a0\u201cA lot of the information can be found online; if you can\u2019t identify with a certain person, look back to the issues you believe in and look up their stances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deadline to register to vote in person, online or by mail varies from state to state. \u00a0For Pennsylvania, the deadline for all three methods is Oct. 11.\u00a0 Other states\u2019 deadlines can be accessed online with a simple Google search.<\/p>\n<p>Historically speaking, the college demographic has not been found in the polls, according to Dr. Diane Johnson, Associate Professor of Politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel strongly that for a liberal democracy to work, everyone must be well-informed to vote,\u201d Johnson said. \u00a0\u201cIt is important for all citizens to register to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are three different ways that a person can register to vote: online, in person and by mail. \u00a0For each of these options, an intended voter must fill out a simple registration form by the deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Before one registers to vote, three requirements must be met. \u00a0The prospective voter must be a U.S. citizen, be 18 years old by the day of the election and live at a Pennsylvania address by Oct. 9. \u00a0If the voter is convicted of a felony, that person loses the right to vote while incarcerated, but has an automatic restoration after release.<\/p>\n<p>For additional information on how to register, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pavoterservices.state.pa.us\/pages\/VoterRegistrationApplication.aspx\">HERE<\/a>.\u00a0 For information on how to receive an absentee ballot, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vote.org\/\">HERE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>By: Sammi Hummer \u00a0\u201917, Staff writer Registering to vote and the act of voting are rights that most college-aged Americans have.
