LVC hosted Writing: A Life,<\/em> featuring poet Kasey Jueds, who gave a reading and answered questions about the craft of writing in the Bishop Library Atrium on Thursday, March 19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jueds has published two books, both of which she read from. \u201cKeeper\u201d was published by Pitt in 2013, and her other book, “The Thicket,” was published by Pitt in 2021. Her work features high detail and attention to place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe place makes people,\u201d Jueds said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKeeper\u201d featured poems based primarily in South Florida, and \u201cThe Thicket\u201d focused on Wisconsin. Now, Jueds resides in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat poems are there to be found?\u201d Jueds said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jueds also talked about her revision process. One of her most notable tips is to set one’s writing aside and come back to it later with fresh eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to make a body\u2014make a container\u2014for the [feelings] that don\u2019t otherwise have a home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To conclude, Jueds spoke about the interpretation of poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to read what I intended,\u201d Jueds said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of space for whoever\u2019s reading it to find what they can find, and I think that\u2019s different for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next \u201cWriting: A Life\u201d featured writer will be poet Ruth Awad. The reading will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Bishop Library Atrium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
