a student&#8217;s perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\"><p><em>The World Health Organization defines sobriety as \u201ca continued abstinence from alcohol and psychoactive drug use.\u201d\u00a0 Lebanon Valley College has designated October 3-6 as Sobriety Awareness Week.\u00a0 Various events are planned to promote discussions on sobriety.\u00a0 Click HERE for those events.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mike Fry\u2019s FYE class is studying addiction.\u00a0 Students were asked to write a story about something or someone who helped shaped one\u2019s attitudes toward alcohol or drugs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>La Vie is posting the stories of six students, who all agreed to the publication of their submission.\u00a0 These writings are unedited.\u00a0 They appear as how they were submitted for the class assignment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Day 1<\/em>:\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>The power of learning from another\u2019s mistakes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By: an anonymous student<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most people learn about drugs from health class.\u00a0 They learn of the consequences and the gruesome impact they have on a life.\u00a0 Some people do not witness the genuine effects of drugs, so they don\u2019t quite receive the lesson.\u00a0 Me?\u00a0 I learned the lesson from someone very close to me.\u00a0 Someone I used to consider family.\u00a0 My dad.<\/p>\n<p>I do not remember much from my childhood, but I have a few solid memories of him.\u00a0 I remember what he looked like and the car he drove.\u00a0 I remember him picking me up from home to go bowling or to Chucky Cheeses every once in a while.\u00a0 My last memory of him was from when I was 7, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.\u00a0 It was a breezy fall afternoon and he was picking me to go to Chucky Cheeses, our normal routine.\u00a0 On the way, he wanted to stop at his cousin\u2019s house to ask him if he wanted to join us.\u00a0 I waited in the car for about 20 minutes before he finally came out of the house, without his \u201ccousin,\u201d and we went on our way.\u00a0 I had innocently asked him why it took so long, and he made up a ridiculous excuse that only a na\u00efve 7-year-old could believe.\u00a0 Although I did not realize it at the time, I later learned that it was not his cousin\u2019s house, it was his dealer\u2019s.\u00a0 On our way to Chucky Cheeses, he had bought crack cocaine.<\/p>\n<p>I have not seen him since he took me out that day; my mom would not let him interact with me.\u00a0 From that point on, I started to realize the true effects of addiction at age 7.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen him go in and out of jail, stealing from the family, and hurting other people.\u00a0 I learned that he would not be able to give the kind of love I wanted from my father.\u00a0 Addiction tears a person apart.\u00a0 A once loving, honorable person can change into a monster that no one would ever recognize.\u00a0 When a person is addicted, nothing in the world matters to them except that drug.\u00a0 They don\u2019t care about their family or friends;
