{"id":13125,"date":"2025-02-26T15:22:17","date_gmt":"2025-02-26T15:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/wordpress\/lavie\/?p=13125"},"modified":"2026-01-16T16:09:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T16:09:08","slug":"service-spotlight-bingo-for-a-cure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.lvc.edu\/lavie\/2025\/02\/26\/service-spotlight-bingo-for-a-cure\/","title":{"rendered":"Service spotlight: Bingo for a cure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"dslc-theme-content\"><div id=\"dslc-theme-content-inner\">\n<p>(By Marina Biltcliff \u201926, staff writer)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, an LVC student and her family make a difference by hosting the world\u2019s largest fundraiser for a rare genetic disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jessica O\u2019Neill, senior marketing major, and her family will put on the 17<sup>th<\/sup> annual bingo event  in March to raise money for Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). FOP is a genetic disease that turns muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues into bone, significantly impacting the mobility of those who have it. One in two million people have this disease, and it currently has no cure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Neill\u2019s cousin, Joshua Scoble, was born with FOP. Scoble\u2019s diagnosis brought O\u2019Neill\u2019s family together to create a large annual fundraiser event to raise money for FOP and help families affected by this disease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to the bingo every year,\u201d O\u2019Neill said. \u201cIt\u2019s so great to see our loyal bingo players return and see new faces that get to learn about FOP.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bingo fundraiser has more than 1,600 players each year, as well as 120 volunteers to run the various events. In addition to bingo, the event has a bake sale and tons of raffle baskets, all donated by local volunteers and community members.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love working with my family to create an event that people want to support,\u201d O\u2019Neill said. \u201cI take pride in knowing that my family\u2019s efforts have helped fund researchers, doctors and clinical trials that will hopefully get us closer to finding a cure.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the 17 years this event has taken place, more than $1.4 million has been raised to support research for FOP.
