Something is rotten at LVC, and students can catch their first whiff of it at Wig and Buckle\u2019s fall cabaret on Friday, Sept. 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By partnering with LVC\u2019s Java Jam program and the theater company\u2019s longtime sponsor, the Allen Theatre, Wig and Buckle gives students the chance to see a sneak peek of the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, the musical follows two brothers\u2019 efforts to write a play in the 1590s. With a little mystical guidance, they set out to write the world\u2019s first musical in an attempt to overtake William Shakespeare, the greatest playwright of their time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cabaret, formally known as \u201cThe Renaissance Revue,\u201d will feature an arrangement of different songs from various musicals as well as a couple from \u201cSomething Rotten,\u201d each performed by members of the cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wig and Buckle president and director of \u201cSomething Rotten\u201d Melissa West, a senior music education major, touted the cabaret as a way to showcase her cast\u2019s talent and passion without giving too much of the show away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m very excited to share the talent in this cast,\u201d West said. \u201cPeople might worry about the quality of a student-run production, but we have some really talented students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the \u201cSomething Rotten\u201d cast is Addy Ruth, senior music education major, who plays Nigel Bottom, one of two leading brothers in the production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI absolutely adore the character and his quirks,\u201d Ruth said. \u201cHe\u2019s a really fun and nerdy kind of fella.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruth will join the rest of the cast to perform the musical\u2019s opening number, \u201cWelcome to the Renaissance,\u201d during the cabaret. The song sets the tone for the musical as a self-aware production that pokes fun at the theatrical traditions it is built upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we\u2019re giggling, we\u2019re looking at how literature and theater have developed,\u201d Ruth said. \u201cWe\u2019re also laughing at ourselves since we\u2019re all theater people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while the musical makes numerous references to other productions, it can certainly be enjoyed by students whose experience with Shakespeare is limited to their English classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you hate Shakespeare, then you\u2019ll love it, and if you love Shakespeare, you\u2019ll still love it,\u201d West said. \u201cHe\u2019s like a rockstar and very much a showman.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cabaret will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Allen Theatre. The first show date for \u201cSomething Rotten\u201d will be on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
