With the end of another academic year fast approaching, a new round of Dutchmen prepare to enter the workforce, and with the hands-on training LVC\u2019s arts and humanities programs provide, it\u2019s no surprise that Abbie Hoffer is among them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoffer, a double major in English and creative writing, has earned a position as an assistant proposal writer for Gannett Fleming Inc.\u2014an engineering consultant group in Cumberland County, PA\u2014in their earth science department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPart of that division is work with invasive species and habitat repair,\u201d Hoffer said. \u201cI really like environmental science and ecology, so the fact that I get to do stuff in this division that might help endangered animals or preserve wetlands sounds really exciting to me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After coming across the application, Hoffer decided to apply, and thanks to her previous experience in a similar area working for her mother\u2019s engineering company during the summers, she was able to stand out amongst the crowd.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, but Hoffer accredits much of her success to LVC\u2019s English and creative writing program and the skills she gained within the classroom as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe professional development class we took was hugely beneficial in helping me interview well,\u201d Hoffer said. \u201cLVC gave me that, as well as good written and email communication, so I\u2019m not checked off as a potential employee because of poor online communication skills.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoffer also notes that her editing class played a large role in providing her with the necessary knowledge for the ins and outs of reading, writing and revising documents.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn my previous position, I would have to grammar check things or make sure that documents were written to the employer\u2019s specifications, so I feel like that was really, really helpful in helping me be a more precise person with [editing related fields],\u201d Hoffer said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoffer is excited to have obtained work that caters to one of her many fields of interest and looks forward to the places she\u2019ll continue to go. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
