A guide to Earth Day at LVC

It seems that now, more than ever, the Earth is depending on humanity to promote sustainability and clean environmental practices. Fortunately, LVC will have plenty of opportunities for students to practice Earth Day throughout the week.

LVC’s festivities begin on Thursday, April 21, from 12-1 p.m. with a lecture, “Preserving Biodiversity: Conservation Efforts to Protect the Regal Fritillary Butterfly.” This species was once widespread, but is currently under threat due to habitat degradation, pathogens and pesticides. Students will learn about wildlife management efforts at Ft. Indiantown Gap to preserve this species. Registration for this event is via Zoom.

Just a couple of hours later, students can participate in Earth Week Campus Clean-Up from 3:30-5:30 p.m. People who attend will work with LVC facilities crew on outdoor spring-cleaning projects. Students interested can sign up on Redbook.

Then, from 5-6:30 p.m., students can come plant a wildflower in the social quad. This opportunity not only supports environmental diversity, but also promotes a great cause, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. To reserve a pot and seeds, sign up on Redbook.

The next day, Friday, April 22, is Earth Week Campus Clean-Up part two. Students will get another chance to clean up the environment around LVC. Once again, this event will be from 3:30-5:30 p.m.; sign up on Redbook.

LVC’s final Earth Day event is the Quittie Creek Nature Park Spring Clean-Up. On Saturday, April 23, Volunteers will meet at the Swingholm Pedestrian Bridge at the Quittie Creek Nature Park in Annville at the southern end of Bachman Road. From there, participants will divide into work crews where they will spread mulch, clear trails, remove invasive species and pick up trash. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, water and snacks. Sign up is on Redbook.

Remember, while Earth Day is April 22, students shouldn’t forget that they can help keep their planet clean throughout the year. For more information about promoting sustainability at LVC, visit LVC’s website under Sustainability Initiatives.
