Dr. Strohman to Present in Paris

Dr. Greg Strohman ’08, adjunct professor of music (low brass), was invited to speak at an analytical musicology conference in Paris, France, in November. He will present his research on the psychoacoustics of harmony, on which he wrote several papers using his combined physics and music degrees from LVC. The conference is organized by the Musicology Research Institute at Sorbonne University, Sciences and Technologies of Music and Sound, and French Society for Musical Analysis.

Drs. Guzmán Zavala and Hinshaw collaborate in opening Dutchirican exhibition at Lebanon Arts Council.

Dutchirican: A Latina/o History of Central Pennsylvania opens on Friday, Sept. 16, from 6:30–8:30 p.m., as part of the Council’s First Fridays program. According to the council, “This is the first exhibition to explain the history of Latinos as part of our state, how they came here, what struggles they had, and what they have contributed to the region. There are posters, photography, and replica of a chicken house where many Puerto Rican tomateros lived in the 1950s.” The exhibition is the result of several years of research by Dr. Hinshaw, Professor of History and Dr. Ivette Guzmán-Zavala, Professor of Spanish. Dr. Benesch Presents for Popper Conference in India

Dr. Philip Benesch, chair of social sciences; associate professor of political science; and director of pre-law and external scholarships and fellowships, was a featured Zoom speaker for a July 28 event to celebrate the 120th anniversary of Popper’s birth. Dr. Benesch’s presentation, Karl Popper and the Reconstruction of Progressive Politics, begins about the 11-minute mark of the video.   

Dr. Albert Presents Student-Faculty Research at International Conference

Dr. Rachel Albert, associate professor of psychology, presented “Infant vocalizations elicit simplified speech in childcare settings.,” at the International Congress on Infant Studies in Ottawa, Canada, and virtually at the National Research Conference on Early Childhood. The research was co-authored by Morgan Ernst ’21 (psychology) and Reagan Little ’23, M’24 (communication sciences & disorders/speech-language pathology). 

Ainsley Buia ’25 and Sara Collevechio ’25 Awarded Research Grant

Biology majors Ainsley Buia ’25 and Sara Collevechio ’25 were awarded the “Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences Undergraduate Research Project” for their project, “The molecular effects of alcohol sensitivity post traumatic brain injury in Drosophila melanogaster.” They, along with classmate and fellow researcher Raegan Laszczyk ’25, were invited to present their research at the 2023 Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences Conference. The trio are conducting their research under the faculty mentorship of Dr. Bona Hoxha, assistant professor of biology. 

Dr. Veenhuizen Presents at National Conference on Glass Science

Dr. Keith Veenhuizen, assistant professor of physics, presented research at the 2022 Glass and Optical Materials Division meeting in Baltimore, Md. The presentation was based on results of a student-faculty research project undertaken by Olivia Magneson ’23 with Dr. Veenhuizen. The talk, “Phase-selective laser-induced crystallization of lead bismuth gallate glass,” reports how several crystal phases form preferentially at different temperatures in lead bismuth gallate glass. By varying the power and scanning speed of the laser irradiating the glass, the temperature profile can be controlled, through which the desired crystal phase can be formed. This talk was given at the Laser Interactions with Glasses session, which was organized by Dr. Veenhuizen in collaboration with Dr. Casey Schwarz of Ursinus College.

Drs. Guzmán-Zavala and Hinshaw Present at Inaugural PSU Medical Humanities Conference

Dr. Ivette Guzmán-Zavala, professor of Spanish, and Dr. John Hinshaw, professor of history, presented at the first regional Medical Humanities Conference last week, which was co-sponsored by the Humanities Department of the Penn State University Medical School, LVC, and other colleges. Dr. Guzmán-Zavala presented a poster, “Rethinking Childbirth: Oral Histories of Puerto Rican Mothers and Midwives,” and Dr. Hinshaw gave a talk that focused on how LVC’s newest major, medical humanities, was conceived and executed. Dr. Robert Carey, professor of biology and director of biochemistry & molecular biology, and Dr. Matthew Sayers, professor of religion and director of religion and philosophy, attended the inaugural conference, which was bristling with about 50 other professionals.

Dr. Dompier among Keynotes for ACC Summit

Dr. Thomas Dompier, associate professor of athletic training, was among four keynote speakers for the recent Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Health and Safety Summit in Greensboro, N.C. He was joined by Dr. LaTisha Bader (Women’s Recovery in Dillon, Colo.), Dr. Doug Aukerman (Oregon State University), and Dr. Cameron Wolfe (Duke University School of Medicine) to host sessions on injury surveillance, drug testing, and suicide prevention, among others. Dr. Dompier presented, “Injury Surveillance and Athletic Trainers: A Practical Approach for Applying Data that Athletic Trainers Collect to Inform Clinical Practice and Prevent Injuries with Individual Institutions and Sports.”

Nearly 20 Criminal Justice and Sociology Majors Present Research at Regional Conference

Dr. Barbara Prince, assistant professor of sociology, announced that 19 criminal justice and sociology majors, many of whom have second majors, presented their yearlong scholarly research projects at the Mid-Atlantic Undergraduate Social Research Conference. More than 60 undergraduates from 18 regional colleges and universities participated in the conference. The LVC student names and presentation titles were:

Dr. Davis Presents Pair of Sessions at State Conference

Dr. Sharon Davis, director of music education and associate professor of music, presented two sessions at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association annual conference in early April. She presented her first session, “Modern Band in the Classroom: Performing, Creating, and Assessment,” with three graduates of the Modern Band Certificate Program, Dan Brenner ’02, Dean Packard-Howey ’16, and Kayla Kurtz. Brenner and Packard-Howey also earned their bachelor’s at LVC. Dr. Davis also presented on the “Redefining General Music” panel discussion.
