Dr. McEvoy Earns Irish Studies Certification

Dr. Gabriela McEvoy, chair of languages and professor of Spanish, completed her certification in Irish Studies at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. McEvoy earned the certificate virtually through the university’s Modern Languages Program.

Editorial Pliegos in Madrid, Spain, published “Palimpsesto. Relatos cortos de irlandeses en el Peru” by Dr. Gabriela McEvoy, chair and associate professor of Spanish. The book of 23 short stories depicts small scenes of everyday life of Irish immigrants in Peru. The book spans from the mid-nineteenth century to the twentieth century. 

Dr. McEvoy Presents in Peru

Dr. Gabriela McEvoy, chair and associate professor of Spanish, recently presented at the XXV Congreso Internacional de Literatura y Estudios Hispanicos in Lima, Peru. She spoke about her forthcoming short story, ‘Paimpsesto: Relatos Cortos de Irlandeses en el Peru.’

Edward Walsh, Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, Faculty of the Built Environment, University College London, editor for the South-Eastern Catholic History, the journal of the Essex Recusant Society, recently reviewed Dr. Gabriela McEvoy’s La experiencia invisible. Immigrantes irlandeses en el Perú for the Irish Migration Studies in Latin America journal. Walsh called the book by McEvoy, chair of languages and associate professor of Spanish, a “fascinating study” and “great read.”

Dr. McEvoy’s Book Reviewed by Brazilian Publication

Dr. Gabriela McEvoy’s recent book, La Experiencia Invisible: Immigrantes Irlandeses en el Perú (The Invisible Experience: Irish Immigrants in Peru), was reviewed by José Manuel Carrasco-Weston, a research assistant at the Research Center of the Universidad del Pacífico (Lima, Peru), for ABEI Journal, a Brazilian publication. Carrasco-Weston noted that McEvoy, chair of languages and associate professor of Spanish, wrote a book that is a “groundbreaking study on the Irish immigration in Peru,” and that it fills a “historical void” in the field.

Dr. Gabriela McEvoy, chair of languages and associate professor of Spanish, recently published “La Experiencia Invisible. Inmigrantes Irlandeses en el Perú” (The Invisible Experience. Irish Immigrants in Peru), and it was the #1 seller at the Fondo Editorial de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) stand at the International Book Fair in Peru. The book is based on Dr. McEvoy’s long-term research into the fragmented history of the Irish emigration to Peru and was published by Fondo Editorial UNMSM.
