Adam Tavel ’03 Kicks Off 2017–2018 “Writing: A Life” Series

Adam Tavel ’03, professor of English at Wor-Wic Community College, returned to his undergraduate alma mater as the second annual writer-in-residence in LVC’s visiting writers’ series, “Writing: A Life.” Sponsored by the English Department, Tavel spent a week on campus meeting with students one-on-one to discuss their work, visiting creative writing classes, delivering a reading of his work, and presenting as part of the Colloquium.

Regarding Tavel’s visit, senior English major Jackie Chicalese said, “The opportunity to meet one-on-one with Adam Tavel and discuss my work was incredibly beneficial, as I was able to receive unique advice and encouragement from a knowledgeable and award-winning poet. As a mentor, Adam was insightful and sincere, and offered his personal experiences and support to assist in preparing me for a transition from undergraduate writing to graduate.”

Tavel has written three books of poetry, including the forthcoming Catafalque, which won the 2017 Richard Wilbur Book Award, and The Fawn Abyss. His first collection, Plash and Levitation, published by the University of Alaska Press, won the Permafrost Book Prize.

“Writing: A Life” is supported by a President’s Innovation Fund grant.
